Scratch Scuff Mar Finish Tester

The Scratch Scuff Mar Finish Tester is designed to evaluate the scratch, scuff, and mar resistance of materials such as automotive paints, coatings, plastics, and decorative finishes. It simulates mechanical contact and friction under controlled conditions, providing quantitative and qualitative assessment of surface durability and appearance retention. This tester complies with automotive standards, including General Motors GM-9150P, to ensure materials meet required performance levels.

Application

You can use this tester to:

Evaluate automotive interior and exterior coatings, paints, and functional surface treatments for scratch and scuff resistance.

Test plastics, sprayed coatings, and decorative panels for surface durability.

Conduct comparative assessment of surface appearance retention and mechanical damage resistance.

Support material selection, R&D validation, and quality control in the automotive and manufacturing industries.

Assess anti-scratch, anti-scuff, and surface integrity performance of materials under simulated real-world use.

Standards

This tester is suitable for testing according to:

(1) GM 9150P – Scratch and scuff resistance for automotive materials

(2) GMW14130 – Surface abrasion and scuff resistance

(3) ISO 1518 – Paints and varnishes—Scratch resistance methods (reference)

(4) ASTM D7027 – Coatings and finishes surface abrasion and scuff evaluation (reference)

(5) SAE J400 – Automotive material surface durability evaluation (reference)

Features

Mechanically robust: Aluminum and solid stainless-steel construction ensures stability and durability

Test Procedures

Secure the sample on the test platform, ensuring flat contact.

Install the loading assembly and verify total weight matches the standard.

Attach the paperclip friction head correctly to the loading assembly.

Drag the sample linearly along the prescribed path under constant pressure.

Repeat the procedure for all four edges of the sample.

After testing, remove the sample and evaluate surface scratches, scuffs, and damage visually.

Record the results and assess material surface durability.
