Abrasion resistance test (Martindale method)

Author:QINSUN Released in:2023-03 Click:147

What is this test for?

This test method relates to the abrasion resistance of fabrics. This method can be used for testing various types of fabrics, including: fabrics, non-woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, home textiles, industrial fabrics and carpet fabrics, and the thickness of the fabric does not exceed 2mm. The results of this test in the laboratory contain major errors, but because this method is widely used in foreign trade, especially in countries other than the United States, this method is widely used to test the wear resistance of fabrics.

Testing the abrasion resistance of textiles on test equipment is one of many factors that influence the actual wearability and durability. However, abrasion resistance and durability are often related and their correlation increases with the Depending on the application, predicting the durability of fabrics based on abrasion resistance testing involves reaware of any additive effects of various factors.

There are three options, including this test method for abrasion resistance, for quality assurance use option

Option 1:

Dust test The end point is that there are 2 or more yarns are broken, or there are holes in the knitting.

How does the test work?

The abrasion resistance is measured by rubbing the sample against a geometric figure on the tester. Abrasion resistance is evaluated in several ways, including comparing visual samples to photographs or the shape of actual samples.

Requirements for Scientific Experiments:

When using this equipment for scientific research purposes, samples must be prepared in accordance with standard ASTM D1776.

Equipment Required:

Martindale Abrasion Tester, Standard Abrasion Resistant Fabric, Standard Felt, Polyurethane Foam Pad, Sample Cutter, Gray Card

Experimental Processexpensive:

1. Preparation of the specimen

2. When cutting the specimen, avoid folding, creasing and creasing;

3. Avoid specimens sticking to oil, water, grease;

4. Use the smallest disc cutter to cut 6 round samples with a diameter of 38 mm. Be careful not to use the cutter too hard to avoid breaking the blade;

5. Weigh the initial mass of the sample;

Preparation of the equipment

1. All tests are performed under standard conditions;

2. Remove the specimen holder from the Martindale Abraser;

3. Note the serial number 1-9 of the sample;

4. Mount the fixture;

 5. Install the assembled jig on the tester;

6. Apply weights numbered 1-9

7. Set the counter.

Start the wear-resistant instrument

1. Turn on the power switch;

2. The program of the instrument is set to do 500 movements at a time;

3. Run the program;

4. When the first set of experiments is complete, remove the sample from the fixture, observe and record sample results and changes;

5. Place the test back on the instrument and continue with the test ;

6. Until the set value is reached. Two or more yarns are broken in the sample, or a hole appears in the knitted fabric.

Report

1. Refer to D4966 for sample description

2. Reference Standards and Test Methods

3. Note the type of friction and dust and quality

4. Calculate the average number of frays.
