Scientists have developed a new type of magnetic nanomaterial that can be used to prevent counterfeit currency

According to foreign media reports, an international research team led by MISIS from Moscow State University of Science and Technology (NUST) has developed a magnetic tunable iron cobalt nickel nanocomposite material. This type of nanocomposite material can be used to protect currency and securities from counterfeiting. Magnetic nanomaterials with controllable magnetic properties are currently one of the research hotspots.

Due to their small size and excellent magnetic and electrical properties, these materials have a wide range of potential applications, ranging from mobile devices to space technology.

The new type of iron cobalt nickel composite material is manufactured by using chemical precipitation and reduction methods.

Yuri Konyukhov, deputy director of the Department of Functional Nanosystems and High Temperature Materials at NUST MISIS, said: "This method is very simple. The most important thing is that it allows to control the performance of the product at each stage of its production and produce chemically pure nano powders with a given composition, shape and dispersion."

Konyukhov also emphasized that the new composite materials have high coercivity value, making the technology suitable for magnetic rubber and different magnetic coupling devices. Another potential application is to protect currencies and securities from counterfeiting.

"The efforts of the scientific community have recently focused on protecting humans and electronic devices from the effects of electromagnetic radiation. Developing thin, flexible, and relatively transparent metal polymer composites for electromagnetic interference shielding is a promising research direction. Utilizing this new type of nanocomposite material with controllable magnetism as magnetic filler may lead to breakthroughs in electromagnetic interference protection," Konyukhov added.
