Definition of color fastness

The so-called color fastness refers to the degree of fading of colored fabrics under the influence of external factors (extrusion, friction, washing, rain, impact, light, seawater impregnation, saliva impregnation, water stains, sweat stains, etc.) during use or processing. This is an important index for fabrics.

Color fastness refers to the resistance of a textile\'s color to various influences during processing and use. The degree of fastness is evaluated by the distortion of the sample and the staining of the undyed lining fabric. The color fastness test from TexTextiles are a routine item in the intrinsic quality test of textiles.

During their use, textiles are exposed to various external influences such as lighting, washing, ironing, sweat stains, friction and chemical influences. Some printed and dyed textiles have also undergone special finishing such as resin finishing, flame retardant finishing, sand washing, wool grinding, etc., which require the color and color of printed and dyed textiles to maintain a certain fastness.

Types of color fastness

Color fastness includes color fastness to soap washing (sample), color fastness to rubbing, color fastness to chlorine water, color fastness to non-chlorine bleach, color fastness to dry cleaning, color fastness to actual laundering (clothes, fabrics), color fastness to sweat stains, color fastness to water, color fastness to light, color fastness to sea water, color fastness tohe saliva etc.

Introduction to general colorfastness

Colorfastness to washing: The sample is stableTogether with the standard lining washed, cleaned and dried and laundered at the right temperature, alkalinity, bleaching and rubbing conditions to obtain test results in a relatively short time. The friction effect between them is completed by a small bath ratio and the corresponding number of stainless steel beads roll, bump, with gray card evaluation to get the test results. Different test methods have different temperature, alkalinity, bleaching and rubbing conditions, as well as sample sizes specially tailored to the testing standards and customer needs. General Color fastness to washing is poor. Colors such as orchid green, bright blue, black red, navy blue, etc.

Dry Clean Color Fastness: Same asFastness to washing.

Rub Fastness: Place the sample on the Fastness Tester and rub the standard white rubbing cloth against it a specified number of times with a specified pressure. Each sample group must be tested for color fastness to dry and wet rubbing. The color on a standard white rubbing cloth is evaluated using a gray card. The resulting series is the measured color fastness. Color Fastness to Rub requires both dry and wet rub tests and all colors on the sample should be rubbed.

Color Fastness to Sunlight: Textiles are mostly exposed to light during use, which affects the colour damage and can lead to the well-known \"fading\". , so that colored textiles change color, generally getting lighter and darker, and some also change color light. Therefore it is necessary to test the color fastness. That is, the sample and a blue wool standardCloths with different fastness levels are placed together under specified conditions for sun exposure, the sample is compared to blue wool fabric to assess color fastness to light. The higher the degree of blue wool standard fabric, the higher the light fastness.

Color fastness to perspiration: The sample is sewn together with the standard paste lining fabric, placed in the perspiration liquid, on the Color fastness to perspiration clamped, placed in the oven at a constant temperature, and then dried, evaluated with gray card, test results. Different test methods have different perspiration fluid ratio, sample size, test temperature and time.

Color fastness to water stains: Test samples treated with water as above.

Fastness to chlorine bleach: After the fabric has been exposed to chlorine bleach solution under certain conditionsg was washed, the degree of color change is assessed. This is the chlorine bleach fastness.

Chlorine-free bleach fastness: After the fabric has been washed in the washed state with non-chlorine bleach, the degree of color change is assessed. This is the non-chlorine bleach fastness.

Confirmation of color fastness:After the dry sample with ccotton lining fabric is pressed in a heater with a certain temperature and pressure for a certain period of time and then the color change of the sample and the color touch of the lining material are evaluated with a gray sample card. The color fastness Hot pressing includes dry pressing, wet pressing and wet pressing. The test method should be selected according to different customer requirements and test standards.

Color fastness to saliva: the sample and the specified lining materials are combinedden, placed in artificial saliva for treatment, removed the test liquid, placed between two plates in the test device and applied the specified pressure, then the sample or lining fabric is dried, and the sample color change and lining fabric stain are evaluated with a gray card .

The Importance of Color Fastness

Good or bad color fastness is directly related to human health and safety. When products have poor color fastness and rain or sweat while wearing, the pigments on the fabric will fall off and fade, and the dye molecules and heavy metal ions can be absorbed by the skin and harm the health of human skin, which will affect the color of other clothes worn on the body. Or discolors other garments when washed with other garments.

Due to the large differences in the processing and use of fabrics, the requirementen different, so most of the current test methods are based on the environment and conditions of the simulation test or comprehensive test, so the color fastness tests are quite extensive ), Japanese (JIS), British (BS) and many other standards, the most common Resistance to washing, resistance to fading, resistance to friction and perspiration, resistance to ironing, resistance to weathering, etc. In practice, the test items are determined solely based on the end use and product standards of the products. For example, product standards for woolen fabrics specify that color fastness to sun exposure must be tested, knitted underwear must be tested for perspiration stain fastness, and outdoor fabrics (e.g. sun exposure). shade, light box fabric, canopy material) must be tested for color fastness to weathering.
